Currently featured is Beach Town in a Forest; The Story of Pine Knoll Shores. Opened in March 2016, this exhibition tells the story of a Bogue Banks community from its earliest occupation by Indians through to the present day. The museum’s well-received Warriors of Carteret County exhibit speaks to the sacrifices of county’s service men and women starting in World War I and progressing through to present conflicts. This exhibit’s tunnel system keeps the little ones busy, while a scavenger hunt keeps the ‘tweens looking long and hard for skulls! Neighbor, Come on Down, is a full scale diorama of Beaufort’s Purvis Chapel, one of the oldest black churches in the state. For the curious visitor, the museum also features stories about pirates, maritime activities, farming, and the Civil War. We can also direct you to other heritage operations in the county that feature these topics in more detail.
